Geographical location: The Navoi region is located in the central part of Uzbekistan, predominantly on the large territory of the Qizilqum desert. The region borders with Kazakhstan in the north, the Djizzak region in the east and the Samarqand region in the southeast, the Bukhara region and, partly, the Kashkadarya region in the south and Karakalpakstan in the west.
The Navoi region is the largest region in Uzbekistan. Major cities in the region are Navoi, Zarafshon, Nurota, Uchkuduk, Khatirchi and Navbakhor.
The Navoi region is rich in natural resources. In particular, the largest gold fields in Uzbekistan (Zarafshan) are concentrated there. There are also large deposits of copper, uranium, silver, tungsten, iron, kaolin, molybdenum, basalt, granite, marble and other metals in the region.
The Navoi region is one of the industrially advanced regions of Uzbekistan. Industry accounts for more than 51% of the gross regional product. In the first quarter of 2007, production amounted to more than UZS 525.9 billion. There are a number of large regional chemical companies such as Navoi Mining and Metallurgy Complex (NGMK), "NavoiyAzot", "QizilqumSement", "AmantaytauGoldFilds" and "GuzgonMarmar" joint-stock companies and other chemical entities operating there.
There is a special policy to set up additional production units locally. Bentonite powder is manufactured locally by the "Bentonit" joint venture, strings of basalt by the "Tizol-N" company and glygecyr (a chemical component) by “Avitsenna”, phosphor concentrate in the NGMK and so on.
Agriculture in the Navoi region has its distinctive features. The cattle-breeding sector here is rather advanced. In the first quarter of 2007, cattle breeders produced more than 13.8 thousand tons of meat, 39.0 thousand tons of milk and 20.4 thousand eggs. With a view to meeting demand and further developing livestock-breeding, at of the beginning of 2007 they increased the number of thoroughbred cattle by 1000. The region is one of the largest suppliers of high-quality astrakhan lamb fur in Uzbekistan.
It is important to point out those farms. In 2007, they have reached 32586 in number, have a predominate share in the agricultural sector. A total of 210478 hectares of land area was allocated to them.
Capital development is of great importance for the economy of the Navoi region. More than UZS 104364.0 million has been put into capital development in the first quarter of 2007. A number of facilities, both of economic and social importance, are under construction. Companies such as "QizilqumSement", "UPP", "Qiziltepa gisht zavodi", "GuzgonMarmar", "NurotaMarmar", produce a major share of building material produced in the Navoi region.
In the first quarter of 2007, the general trade turnover in the region reached UZS 62103.4 million. The share of state sector amounted to little more than 5%, and the non-state sector-about 95%. For the same period, foreign trades of the region exceeded USD 206.6 million, an increase of 10.1% compared to the same period in 2006.
The services sector in the region is steadily growing and today its share in the gross regional product has reached 29%. There is a special policy in place to create additional jobs. 6.556 jobs were created in the first quarter of 2007.
Importance is also given to the social sphere. There are more than 380 elementary and secondary schools, 2 academic lyceums, 25 professional colleges and 2 universities in region.
